Timeline

January 2021 - March 2021

Oobi is a handheld device that creates a one-on-one connection between loved ones through ambient light communication and haptic feedback.

This was a project done for my prototyping class during my Master's program.

OBJECTIVE

To recreate moments of implicit connection between remote loved ones.

Implicit social connections are unspoken moments of comfort, like sharing a quiet morning coffee with a family member or watching a movie with a partner. These moments were lost during the Covid-19 pandemic as people were physically separated.

Introducing

OOBI

Creating subtle feelings of togetherness for loved ones who are separated by distance.

PHYSICAL FORM

The intentionally minimal and compact Oobi form seamlessly blends into home decor and emits a soft light when contacted by a loved one. It is also lightweight and easy to handle.

MOBILE APP

The Oobi app enables device setup, syncing, and customization, but is designed to be used only for initial setup.

Based on user testing, we kept the app experience short to avoid making users feel tethered to a screen.
